What is a breast lift or mastopexy?

Mastopexy consists in the correction of ptosis (drooping of the breast) that affects the nipple, areola, and glandular tissue. Thus, the shape and firmness of the breasts is recovered and the nipple and areola are repositioned in the place where they anatomically correspond.

When, in addition to lifting the breasts, it is desired to increase their volume, this surgery is combined with the use of breast prostheses.

What do we achieve with a breast lift or mastopexy?

Correct the ptosis (drooping of the breast) that affects the nipple, areola and glandular tissue. With this we manage to recover the shape and firmness of the breasts.

Reestablish the volume and shape of the breasts after pregnancy or weight loss.

Correct breast asymmetries .

There are different degrees of breast ptosis and multiple classifications. Normally one is used that establishes three degrees depending on the position of the nipple in relation to the inframammary fold. In the image we can see the degrees I - III (mild - severe) and lastly the pseudoptosis, in which the mammary gland has descended, but the nipple is above or at the level of the inframammary fold.

What does breast lift surgery or mastopexy involve?

There are different surgical techniques to perform the breast lift. On the one hand, the amount of skin that is left over is removed and on the other hand, a redistribution of the mammary gland is performed. The scars that will finally remain are one of the following:

Periareolar: around the areola.
Vertical: around the areola and vertical line to the submammary fold.
Inverted T: around the areola, vertical line and another one along the submammary fold.

Overall, it is assumed that the greater the ptosis (droop) of the breast, the greater the scars.

These scars are located in the least anatomically visible way and over time are virtually unnoticeable. In the Angela Ojeda Clinic we have the system of Laser UrgoTouch, that induces an increase controlled of the temperature in the skin, modulating an inflammatory reaction and promoting the harmonious synthesis of a collagen network, improving the final result of the scar.

Dr. Ojeda will be the one who evaluates each case individually, analyzing the anatomical characteristics and form of your breasts. Only then we will be able to recommend the type of ideal procedure with which we are going to fulfill your desires and expectations, obtaining natural and lasting results.

Pre-operative study

At Clínica Ángela Ojeda we always guarantee the greatest security when carrying out all interventions. For that reason in the preoperative consultation we carry out:

Detailed clinical history and physical exploration, with personal antecedents and previous pathologies.

Analytical conventional with study of coagulation.

Electrocardiogram

Chest X-ray, sometimes required.

In addition, because it is breast surgery, it is advisable to have a recent mammogram, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer.

All these tests will be evaluated by one of the specialists in Anesthesiology and Resuscitation who are part of the team, who will indicate if your state of health is optimal to carry out the intervention with total security and guarantees.

How long does the surgery take?

In order to guarantee the safety and well-being of the patient, the interventions are always performed in the hospital, in optimal conditions of hygiene and sterility.

The surgical procedure has an estimated duration of 1-3 hours. The anesthesia used is general and the time of admission to the hospital where we perform the intervention is 24 hours.

How is the recovery in the breast lift or mastopexy?

After the intervention, a compressive elastic bandage will be placed to improve the patient's comfort in the immediate post-operative period. The morning after the operation we will make the first cure. It will be Dr. Ojeda personally who will assess that everything is within the planned and will be placed a specific bra, which will have to maintain for approximately 1 month.

The first 24-48 hours

During the first 24-48 hours it is normal to have some discomfort, with a feeling of pressure in the chest and moderate pain. For this we will take care of scheduling the necessary analgesia, which together with relative rest, will manage to control such discomfort.

All cures and check-ups will be performed by professionals who are part of our medical team. The scars will initially redden for 3-6 months, and will subsequently lighten as they mature, becoming almost imperceptible after 12-18 months.

To guarantee the quality of the result, we individualize each post-operative process with personalized indications. Therefore, we consider it essential for a correct recovery and excellent results, to follow the guidelines set by both the doctor and her team.

The first days

3-4 days after the operation, you will be able to lead a more or less normal life and return to work, with certain limitations on effort. Non-impact sports can be resumed progressively from the 3rd week onwards, always with the consent of your surgeon.
