What is an Abdominoplasty or Abdominal Dermolipectomy?

Weight changes, pregnancies or sedentary lifestyles can produce excess fat and/or skin in the abdominal region. This aesthetic problem can be present in both men and women, who despite a healthy lifestyle, do not manage to have a firm and flat abdominal area.

It is a surgical procedure through which the excess skin of the abdominal area is removed, the fat located in the abdomen and flanks (when combined with liposuction) and the abdominal musculature is repaired and reinforced.

With this intervention we not only achieve an aesthetic improvement, but also of the posture, allowing us to perform sports activities more easily and efficiently.

What types of abdominoplasty exist?

There are multiple variants in this procedure:

Classic abdominoplasty: horizontal incision in the pubis and around the umbilicus. It treats the supra and infraumbilical skin excess, as well as the weakness of all the abdominal muscles.
Miniabdominoplasty: horizontal incision in the pubis. It treats only the infra-umbilical excess skin, in addition to the weakness of the abdominal muscles below the umbilicus.
Lipoabdominoplasty: consists in associating the classic abdominoplasty or mini-abdominoplasty, with the extraction of fat in the abdominal area with the objective of further defining the silhouette of the body contour.

Dr. Ojeda will be the one who evaluates in an individual way each case, analyzing the anatomical characteristics and form of your abdomen. Only then we will be able to recommend the type of procedure with which we are going to fulfill your desires and expectations, obtaining satisfactory and lasting results.

What does the abdominoplasty surgery involve?

Firstly, a horizontal incision is made at pubic level. In the case of the classic abdominoplasty, a periumbilical incision is also associated, since the excess skin above the umbilicus is also treated (as opposed to the mini-abdominoplasty).

Conventional abdominoplasty

The abdomen skin is then separated from the abdominal musculature and the rectums are plicated. The rectus muscles of the abdomen often lose their original tone and position as a result of pregnancy or the passage of time. The separation of them produces an abdominal distension or bulge. With plication we manage to re-tension the muscles and reposition them in the midline of the abdomen, thus obtaining a firm and flat abdomen.

In the classic abdominoplasty, the muscles are plicated along their entire length, while in the mini-abdominoplasty, only the portion below the navel is retained.

Finally, the skin is stretched separately at pubic level and the remaining portion is removed. In the case of classic abdominoplasty, the navel is repositioned in its new location. In mini-abdominoplasty, the position of the navel is not modified.

It is frequent that this surgery is combined with liposuction in flanks and abdomen, with the objective of defining the silhouette even more and recovering the harmony of the body contour.

What scars will remain after the abdominoplasty?

In the classic abdominoplasty the resulting scar is relatively wide, while in the mini-abdominoplasty it has a considerably shorter length. Nevertheless, in both cases, due to its location and design it can be easily hidden with underwear or bikini. In spite of the scar, the change in the silhouette and the fact of recovering the harmony of the body contour makes it one of the interventions that gives more satisfaction to the patients.

The scars will initially redden for 3-6 months, and later they will lighten in a process of maturation, becoming very unnoticeable after 12-18 months. In the Angela Ojeda Clinic we have the system of Laser UrgoTouch, that induces an increase controlled of the temperature in the skin, modulating an inflammatory reaction and promoting the harmonious synthesis of a collagen network, improving the final result of the scar.

Who is a candidate for
an abdominoplasty?

With excess abdominal fat

With diastasis (separation) of the abdominal muscles: frequent after pregnancies

Presence of skin flaccidity or infra-umbilical stretch marks

Unsightly scars on the abdomen: cesarean section, previous abdominal surgeries…

With excess skin from weight loss.

Repair of abdominal muscles.

Pre-operative study

At Clínica Ángela Ojeda we always guarantee the greatest security when carrying out all interventions. For that reason in the preoperative consultation we carry out:

Detailed clinical history and physical examination, with personal history and previous pathologies.

Conventional analysis with coagulation study.

Chest X-ray, sometimes required.

In addition, because it is surgery on the abdomen, imaging tests may be requested in certain cases to assess the existence of hernias.

All these tests will be assessed by one of the specialists in Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation who are part of the team, who will indicate whether your state of health is optimal for carrying out the intervention with total safety and guarantees.

How long does the surgery take?

In order to guarantee the safety and well-being of the patient, the interventions are always performed in the hospital, in optimal conditions of hygiene and sterility.

The surgical procedure has an estimated duration of 2 - 3 hours, depending on the technique and whether liposuction is associated.

The anesthesia used is usually general, although in certain cases it can be done with epidural anesthesia. The time of admission to the hospital where we perform the intervention is 24 hours.

What is recovery like after an abdominoplasty?

The First 24 hours

After the intervention, a compressive elastic garment, such as a girdle, will be placed in the abdominal area. The objective is to control the swelling and help the skin to readapt to the new silhouette; and you will have to maintain it for approximately 1 month. The morning after the operation we will make the first cure. It will be Dr. Ojeda personally who will evaluate that everything is within the foreseen thing.

The first days

During the first days it is normal to have some discomfort, with a feeling of heaviness due to the swelling. For it we will take care to guide the necessary analgesia, which together with the relative rest, they will manage to control the above mentioned annoyances. After the operation you should not do intense stretching, carry weight or make intense efforts.

From the first day we will recommend taking short walks, avoiding stretching the abdomen, to encourage the reabsorption of the edema (swelling) by stimulating lymphatic and venous circulation. It is normal to present a loss of sensitivity, with a sensation of corkiness, in the operated area; this will be progressively recovered.

After about 10 days after the operation, you will be able to lead a more or less normal life and return to work, with certain limitations on effort. Non-impact sports can be resumed progressively from the 4th week onwards, always with the consent of your surgeon. The desired aspect is not evident right after the surgery; you will have to wait approximately 4 - 6 weeks for the swelling to go down and the definitive results will be progressively verified.

All cures and revisions will be performed by professionals who are part of our medical team. To guarantee the quality of the result, we individualize each post-operative process with personalized indications. Therefore, we consider it essential for a correct recovery and excellent results to follow the guidelines set by both the doctor and her team.
