What is blepharoplasty?
One of our main facial features are our eyes, with our gaze we express an infinite number of emotions. With the passage of time it is common to have excess skin on the eyelids and accumulation of fat in the bags, resulting in a tired or sad look. Through blepharoplasty surgery, the look is rejuvenated, solving those features that produce a premature aging of the face.
Blepharoplasty is a surgery that consists in the resection of excess eyelid skin and associated fat bags.
What does blepharoplasty surgery involve?
The incisions made for the upper eyelids are hidden in the natural fold of the eyelid, so over time they are invisible. In the lower eyelids, the incisions can be located on the edge of the eyelashes, or more frequently, inside them (transconjunctival blepharoplasty), avoiding the sectioning of the orbicularis muscle and without visible scars.
Surgery can be performed only on the upper eyelids, on the lower ones or combining both eyelids on each eye. It is also frequently associated with another facial rejuvenation technique, lipostructure or fat padding, in the nasojugal groove and cheekbones to improve dark circles under the eyes and provide greater structural support to the periocular area.
Dr. Ojeda will be the one who evaluates each case individually, analyzing the anatomical characteristics of the orbital region. Only then we will be able to recommend the type of ideal procedure with which we are going to fulfill your desires and expectations, obtaining natural and lasting results.
When is it recommended?
Blepharoplasty is an intervention that is recommended for both men and women who present:
Excess skin in the eyelids, either due to hereditary causes or normal aging.
Presence of bags in the lower eyelids, either due to hereditary causes or normal aging.
At Clínica Ángela Ojeda we always guarantee the greatest security when carrying out all interventions. Therefore in the preoperative consultation we carry out:
In addition, as this is eye surgery, you will be asked questions about whether you wear glasses, contact lenses, have dry eyes, etc.
All these tests will be assessed by one of the specialists in Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation who are part of the team, who will indicate whether your state of health is optimum for carrying out the operation with total safety and guarantees.
How long does the surgery take?
In order to guarantee the safety and well-being of the patient, the interventions are always performed in the hospital, in optimal conditions of hygiene and sterility.
The surgical procedure has an estimated duration of 1-2 hours, depending on whether the upper eyelids are operated on alone or combined with lower ones. The anesthesia used is local and sedation and is performed on an outpatient basis, after a few hours of admission to the hospital.
What is the recovery like after a blepharoplasty?
The first hours
After the surgery we will place a special bandage on the eyelids (steri-strips) and a lubricating ointment on the eyes. You will notice some discomfort, easily controlled with the analgesia we will prescribe. The first few days we will tell you how to apply certain eye drops to keep your eye hydrated and avoid infection. It is also advisable to keep the head elevated to reduce possible swelling or bruising.
The first days
The stitches are usually removed on the 5th or 6th day. The edema and hematomas tend to disappear gradually as the days pass from the operation (can use makeup to disguise in the first days). From the 2nd - 3rd day onwards, patients can start reading or watching TV. It is not recommended to do so before this date due to the visual effort involved.
All treatments and check-ups will be carried out by professionals who are part of our medical team. During the first weeks it is normal for the scars to have a pinkish tone, but as the months go by they become imperceptible. It is necessary to wear sunglasses for the first few weeks and use sun protection on the eyelids to avoid pigmentation of the scars.
To guarantee the quality of the result, we individualize each post-operative process with personalized indications. Therefore, we consider it essential for a correct recovery and excellent results, to follow the guidelines set by both the doctor and her team.
The first 3-4 days
3-4 days after the operation, you will be able to lead a more or less normal life. However, it is common for swelling and some bruising to persist during the first week. The incorporation to their work activity is usually after 7-10 days. You will be able to use your contact lenses again after 2 weeks. Non-impact sports can be resumed progressively after the third week, always with the consent of your surgeon.
