Techniques and procedures
What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty is a surgical technique by which the shape, volume or symmetry of the breasts is improved through the placement of cohesive silicone gel prosthesis.
What can we improve with breast augmentation?
Women with small breasts who feel unhappy with their body proportions. The increase of their breasts will allow to improve their physiognomy.
Asymmetric breasts: many women have asymmetry in their breasts although it usually goes unnoticed. However, when it is significant it can affect self-confidence. Augmentation corrects this asymmetry and achieves a balance in the anatomy of both breasts.
Correcting a loss of volume in the breasts: after pregnancies, weight loss...
Breast reconstruction after oncological surgeries: lumpectomies, quadrantectomies, mastectomies...
What types of prosthesis are there?
In Clínica Ángela Ojeda we work with the breast implants of the commercial houses MENTOR (Johnson&Johnson) and POLYTECH. Using prosthesis with the highest guarantees is essential, these brands offer proven quality over time, being approved for use both in Europe and the U.S.
Both have a guarantee of rupture and capsular contracture in the first 10 years after surgery.
There are anatomical or round prostheses, which differ in their shape and volume distribution. Dr Ojeda will recommend one or the other depending on the anatomy and shape of your breasts in order to meet your objective and expectations.
How to select the size of the prosthesis?
The implants are measured according to their volume, in cubic centimeters. At Clínica Ángela Ojeda we seek to find a balance between your desire for volume and the convenience of your anatomy; always looking for a natural result.
In this process they will go of the hand of the Dr Ojeda, possessing several methods to choose for the ideal prosthesis for every patient.
On the one hand we will take several measures with idea to analyze its anatomy and we will make a test with meters/sizers and a t-shirt, to obtain a first approximation of the volume and characteristics of the wished chest.
On the other hand we will carry out a volume test using Crisalix 3D Digital Simulation, which will allow you to visualise an approximation of the result after the surgery. In this way we will be able to ensure that we understand your wishes not only in terms of volume, but also in terms of the height, projection and definitive shape of the breasts.
In what plane is the prosthesis placed?
There are different levels of implant positioning (subglandular, subfascial and submuscular). Depending on the anatomy and form of the breasts, Dr. Ojeda will advise which is the suitable technique individualizing for every patient.
How is the breast implant inserted?
There are multiple approaches to place the prosthesis: submammary, periareolar and transaxillary. Dr. Ojeda will explain you in the consultation the advantages and disadvantages of each one of the incisions.
The scars created during the augmentation mammoplasty are small, about 3-4cm, and are always located in discreet locations, becoming practically imperceptible as the months go by. In the Angela Ojeda Clinic we have a system of Laser UrgoTouch, that induces an increase controlled of the temperature in the skin, modulating an inflammatory reaction and promoting the harmonious synthesis of a collagen network, improving the final result of the scar.
The most used routes are the submammary and the periareolar, nevertheless the final decision will be taken in a climate of well-being and confidence, always taking into account the personal opinion of our patients.
At Clínica Ángela Ojeda we always guarantee the greatest security when carrying out all interventions. For that reason in the preoperative consultation we carry out:
In addition, because it is breast surgery, it is advisable to have a recent mammogram, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer.
All these tests will be evaluated by one of the specialists in Anesthesiology and Resuscitation who are part of the team, who will indicate if your health condition is optimal to carry out the intervention with total safety and guarantees.
How long does the surgery take?
In order to guarantee the safety and well-being of the patient, the interventions are always performed in the hospital, in optimal conditions of hygiene and sterility.
The surgical procedure has an estimated duration of 1-2 hours. The anesthesia used is general and the time of admission to the hospital where we perform the intervention is 24 hours.
How is the recovery in breast augmentation?
Dr. Ojeda uses a surgical technique with which it is not usually necessary to leave drains. After the intervention a compressive elastic bandage will be placed to improve the comfort of the patients in the immediate postoperative period.
The first morning
The morning after the intervention we will make the first cure, removing the dressings and drains, if necessary. Dr. Ojeda will personally assess that everything is within the planned timeframe and a specific bra will be fitted, which will have to be maintained for approximately 1 month.
The first 24-48 hours
During the first 24-48 hours it is normal to be more upset, with a feeling of pressure in the chest and moderate pain. For this we will take care of the necessary analgesia, which together with relative rest, will manage to control such discomfort.
All cures and check-ups will be carried out by professionals who are part of our medical team. To guarantee the quality of the result, we individualize each post-operative process with personalized indications. Therefore, we consider it essential for a correct recovery and excellent results to follow the guidelines set by both the doctor and her team.
The first days
3-5 days after the operation, you will be able to lead a more or less normal life and return to work, with certain limitations on effort. Non-impact sports can be resumed progressively from the 4th week onwards, always with the consent of your surgeon. Initially the scars will be pink, but they will progressively improve from the 6th week onwards.
Mammographic controls should continue to be carried out according to each woman's age, with prior warning of the existence of breast prostheses.
