What is the double chin?
What we colloquially know as a double chin, consists of a submental fat accumulation that hangs under the chin and is usually associated with a certain degree of skin flaccidity. Its presence leads to a loss of definition of the jaw line, being one of the signs of facial aging.
The origin of the accumulation of fat in the submental area is not necessarily linked to overweight, there are other conditions that may be associated: age, genetic factors or consumption of certain drugs.
The fact that it is an aesthetic condition that is generally refractory to diets and physical exercise, makes people seek medical surgical treatments to solve their problem.
How can we remove it?
- Non-surgical treatments: Belkyra®
- Liposuction
- Cervical Lift
What is submental liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure by which fat deposits located in the jowl area are removed through a process of aspiration. The objective is to remodel and improve the definition of the neck and jaw line.
For this purpose, cannulas are used to mechanically separate the adipocytes (fat cells) and then aspirate and extract them.
After the liposuction no visible scars are left since the incisions through which the cannulas are approached are very small, about 3mm.

In what cases is submental liposuction recommended?
The best results are obtained in those people with localized fat deposits, generally resistant to diet and exercise; and with good or moderate skin quality. It is essential to achieve a correct balance between the fat we extract and the skin's capacity to readapt to the vacuum generated, so that there are no areas of excess skin (hanging skin). When there is skin flaccidity and little elasticity such readaptation is worse and it may be necessary to associate other surgical procedures.
Dr. Ojeda will be the one who evaluates in an individual way each case, analyzing the characteristics of the excess of fat, as well as the tone and firmness of the skin. Only then we will be able to recommend the technique, or combination of them, with which we are going to fulfill your desires and expectations, obtaining satisfactory and lasting results.
Pre-operative study
At Clínica Ángela Ojeda we always guarantee the greatest security when carrying out all interventions. Therefore in the preoperative consultation we carry out:

All these tests will be evaluated by one of the specialists in Anesthesiology and Resuscitation who are part of the team, who will indicate if your health condition is optimal to carry out the intervention with total safety and guarantees.

How long does the surgery take?
In order to guarantee the safety and well-being of the patient, the interventions are always performed in the hospital, under optimal conditions of hygiene and sterility.
The surgical intervention has an estimated duration of 1 hour; although it varies if other procedures are associated. The anesthesia used is local and sedation. The time of admission to the hospital where we perform the intervention is ambulatory.
How is the recovery after a liposuction?
The first hours
After the intervention, a compressive elastic band will be placed in the submental area. The objective is to control the swelling and help the skin to readapt to the new silhouette.
The first days
During the first days it is normal to have some discomfort, with a burning sensation or heaviness due to the swelling (from the liquids administered) and some bruising in the areas of liposuction. We will arrange for the necessary analgesia, which, together with relative rest, will manage to control such discomfort.
All cures and check-ups will be carried out by professionals who are part of our medical team. The desired aspect is not evident right after the surgery, you will have to wait approximately 1 month for the swelling to go down and the definitive results will be progressively verified.
To guarantee the quality of the result, we individualize each post-operative process with personalized indications. Therefore, we consider it essential for a correct recovery and excellent results to follow the guidelines set by both the doctor and her team.
The first 4-5 days
After 4 - 5 days after the intervention, you will be able to lead a more or less normal life and to incorporate to your work activity, with certain limitations of effort. Non-impact sports can be resumed progressively from the 3rd week onwards, always with the consent of your surgeon.
